Housing prices are getting out of control

Housing prices are getting out of control and making it so more and more people will never be able to afford one. I consider myself extremely lucky because I married someone who bought her house a number of years ago, but I have no doubt that if I were still single it would be quite difficult to save up the amount of money I'd need for a down payment, especially in the town I live in.

What can be done to help people who have no realistic shot of saving up enough money to afford a home? I don't want to go back to the days leading up to the housing bubble in 2008-2009 where NINJA (no income, no job, no assets) loans brought our economy to it's knees, but what we have now isn't working either.

That's unfortunate to hear. I haven't kept up with the market much, but I was just assuming that it was still a buyers market. I wonder what is causing the prices to go up?

I think a lot of it depends on where you live. A house in my "new" home town of Portland (moved out here in 2012) is WAYYYYY more expensive than the houses in my former home town of Peoria, IL are.

I read somewhere recently that the odds of the next generation being able to afford a house any time soon is ridiculously low. I believe that particular paper was a mix of the housing market, student loans and over all inflation too. But overall it's the same issue. Hopefully something can be done about this. People need to be able to afford and purchase homes.
