Individuals and families currently receiving "Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits (SSDI), Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who didn't file a tax return in the last two years" who have dependents that would qualify for the additional $500 stimulus check will need to enter their information into the IRS online portal by 4 p.m. EST, Wednesday, April 22 to receive your additional $500 per eligible child payment.

    IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said:

"We want to 'Plus $500' these recipients with children so they can get their maximum Economic Impact Payment of $1,200 plus $500 for each eligible child as quickly as possible. They'll get $1,200 automatically, but they need to act quickly and register at IRS.gov to get the extra $500 per child added to their payment. These groups don't normally have a return filing obligation and may not realize they qualify for a larger payment. We're asking people and organizations throughout the country to share this information widely and help the IRS with the Plus $500 Push."

So, if you fall in to one of these categories, have a dependent child, and did not file taxes for 2018 or 2019 then be sure to log onto the IRS online portal ASAP and enter your information to ensure that you'll receive the additional $500 per dependent child in your household.

Good post. So if you miss the deadline, you can still get the $500/dependent but you will have to wait until you file your 2020 taxes in 2021. So almost an entire year. And most people in this situation aren't normally required to file, but it looks like they will have to file a simple tax return for 2020 to get it if you missed the deadline.

Reason being, the stimulus checks are technically an advance on a 2020 tax credit. And the IRS is only going to pay out to each person once in advance.

SSI and VA recipients actually have a little more time than April 22nd because the IRS is processing their payments by the first 2 weeks of May. But not much more time - its best to update using the Non-Filers portal asap if you have a dependent the IRS needs to know about.

Good news here is that means the IRS is processing stimulus payments for everyone you listed right on time, with no delays. You can see the timetable for SS, SSDI, SSI, RRB and VA recipients here, along with anyone that hasn't gotten a stimulus check yet and wants to know when there's will come in the mail:

That's good to know. So this is just so the people who fall into this group who have dependents that may qualify for the additional $500, right?

They will get the additional $500 per dependent no matter what, but if they don't update their info by later today then they will have to wait until next year to get the additional $500. Am I understanding that correctly?

Yeah, if you get any of these benefits and didn't report your qualifying dependents by the deadline, you can still get the extra stimulus, you just have to wait until you file your 2020 taxes.
