Hi, I recently received the stimulus check. I do have a valid social security number and did file for taxes in 2019. Moreover, when I log into check the status of my payment it says that the money has been deposited into my bank account and does not say anything about returning it. The issue I have is that I am not a citizen of the US and do not currently reside there. I was a college student.

Yeah, read a few things yesterday about some people getting stimulus checks when they shouldn't. This happens every time the govt sends out checks to the masses like this. Since they go off of tax returns, many times they don't filter out certain people that shouldn't be receiving them. For example, people that have died are getting checks.

Its unclear what they officially say they want you to do if you got the money when you shouldn't have. Its likely you won't have to do anything. You can't really be penalized for their mistake. At least they haven't penalized people in the past for similar situations, like when they sent out stimulus checks after 9/11. Thousands got it that shouldn't have.

    J.K logic,

Thanks for the reply. I am entitled to keep and use these funds without being penalized for it or do I need to contact the IRS and advise them on this situation?

I have seen this a few places. You will get a letter in the mail 15 days after payment is processed. It should detail some kind of protocol of what you need to do if a mistake was made.

What should I do if I think my stimulus payment is incorrect?

    Wait and see what happens.

The IRS is going to send all stimulus recipients a letter in the mail 15 days after paying them. An IRS spokesman says the letter will confirm how the money was sent and tell taxpayers the best way to alert the IRS if anything needs to be corrected. So, assistance is TBD — but it is coming.

Unfortunately I am not in the US anymore so if they send mail to my last address I will not receive it. Any advice on how to proceed?

I have also unfortunately spent some of this money for rent and I don't think it is fair that we would be required to pay back the full amount if it comes to that..

We can't for sure what you will have to do. Only that when this has happened in the past, people weren't required to do anything and they were able to keep the money. I'll keep an eye out and update here once the IRS officially gives clarity on this though.

I will say, this is a tax rebate advance on 2020 taxes, that you would have gotten when we all filed in 2021. But they expedited the process because of the immediate need.

So even if worst case scenario they do require it back somehow, they won't take any action until at least 2021, if and when you file again in the US.

Hi Deano, can you tell me where you heard this ?

Hey have you heard anything? Even a couple of my friends who are in the same situation as me received it and we just plan on keeping and using them.

I had my taxes done by a tax preparer. My income tax check was direct deposited into my bank account. The portal said it would be deposited on the 15th with an account number with last 3 of my social. The bank sent it back. Now I checked again and it says being deposited on the 24 but to that same third party bank. Why would they send it back to them? Am I gonna have to wait a long time for a paper check?

Nothing yet. We are talking about the IRS so it could take a while, even months, before they officially address this issue. If your friends get the letter in the mail, the one I mentioned that comes 15 days after you get funds, that letter should detail what they should do. Or at least it might.

It says the letter will just state the method and time of payment and what you should do if you don't receive the funds.
