It is sometimes normal for it to take a week or more to get a response from your state and get approved, but right now response times are far from normal.

We have an unprecedented amount of people applying for unemployment in this country right now, all at the same time. On top of that, states are scrambling to implement the new changes from Congress' Cares Act, that greatly expands unemployment benefits.

The enhanced benefits include an extra $600/wk on top of whatever you get approved for, for your state. But that won't start until this week or maybe later for some states. New York is the first state sending out higher benefit checks and other states are still working on changing their application process to allow for gig workers and other self-employed individuals to apply.

What state are you in? Did you experience any site crashes or anything like that? How long did it take for you to apply?

    Also, some good news.

States will be giving enhanced unemployment checks out retroactively. Here's an exert from a CNN article about that:

    Payments will be retroactive

The rollout comes at a time when states are overwhelmed by an unprecedented crush of people filing for first-time benefits as companies large and small lay off and furlough workers.

Nearly 10 million Americans submitted initial claims in the last two weeks of March. But countless more were unable to get through to their state unemployment agencies and complete their applications.

But those who haven't been able to file their initial claims yet shouldn't lose out. The federal enhancement will be paid retroactively to claims filed starting March 29 in most, if not all, states. The additional payments end by July 31 at the latest, under the current legislation.

I am in Massachusetts and the unemployment website says my claim for last week was paid and the direct deposit is today but it isn't showing in my bank account yet. Anyone else seeing a delay?

I was let go 3/26 applied for unemployment and haven’t received any money. I filed my taxes in February and am suppose to get a large refund but still not processed. Can’t get a hold of mortgage company and credit card companies so I am really screwed. Thanks Pa for nothing. Can’t get aid from the government temporarily. Am 60 and never needed help. No income but I’m not a migrant worker I was told so can’t get food stamps. WTF??

Have you received any confirmation or other communication from the Department of Human services in Pennsylvania about either of your applications for unemployment or Food Stamps?

States are undoubtedly swamped right now, but if you filed online you should have some sort of communication from the state stating where your application stands.

If you have confirmation that you're supposed to receive a direct deposit today then I would suggest waiting until the end of the day before doing anything. If you haven't received it by the end of the day even then it can't hurt to contact your Department of Human Services tomorrow.

My guess is that states around the country are just trying to process the sudden and massive spike of unemployment claims and it will take them some time to get it all sorted out. I know that doesn't help much when you need the money to pay your bills, but if you have confirmation that your unemployment application was approved then rest assured you will be getting paid soon.

When I went onto my account 3/17 It said to reactivate my account so I did. I got payment for 1 week.

Second week I requested 3/22-3/28. On 3/29. I went to request benefits and said I need to apply, so I did. It also told me to start requesting benefits starting 4/6 for the prior week. I did but it says I am not authorized to receive payment.

I understand this is hard for everyone but this is ridiculous, I have been unemployed since 3/13. I have been nothing but patient, I tried calling at the designated time today and it just hangs up on me everytime. Why did i have to reactivate and then tell me I need to apply 2 weeks later. I am so lost and frustrated. Now I am back to square one.

From what it sounds like to me without knowing all of the info of course, is maybe there was a lapse in your applying. I'm almost certain that you have to apply weekly for the benefits, no matter which state you live in. So if you went over the 7-day time period it probably asked you to reactivate your account, which then it would take another week to receive the funds.

I'm in no way at all blaming it on you, of course. Just offering another look at it to maybe help catch the issue.

I've also seen that it's very difficult to get someone on the phone at the call centers right now. I'm sure it's extremely frustrating, but hang in there and keep trying. Unfortunately right now there's no alternative. The system is flooded but it will level out soon.
