The decennial census is up against a powerful enemy and the stakes couldn't be higher. Due to events beyond anyone's control, there is now a very real possibility of a dramatic under count in many parts of the United States, which could be catastrophic for the residents living in those areas. That's because the census isn't just used to determine Congressional districts, but will also help determine where Federal dollars will be sent for the next decade.
It's almost impossible to overstate the importance of participating in the census, even during challenging and uncertain times. The result of the census can determine whether that new school will be built in your community or shut down for good; that pothole riddled road gets repaved or left to deteriorate even further; the hospital is upgraded to meet the demands of the 21st century or consolidated due to lack of resources; and the bridge you hold your breath every time you pass over is rebuilt or left to fall deeper into disrepair. I can go on and on.
Every challenging time in history poses their own unique challenges, but that is no excuse to not participate in the 2020 Census, especially since this year is the first time you can fill out your questionnaire online.
So you really have no excuse to not fill out your census this year. Anyone who has access to the internet can fill out their questionnaire from the comfort of their own home. If you don't have access to reliable internet then you can also complete your questionnaire over the phone or by filling out a paper questionnaire and mailing it back to the Federal Government.
These are scary times. There is no doubt about that. But we will get through these difficult times and normal life will return once again. Your participation in the census will help determine how your community comes out of this unfortunate time in history.
