If you work over the summer as a paid intern do you have to file that on your taxes? Reason asking is a friend of mine is curious. He got paid cash only. Don't think they did much or any paperwork. Is that considered actual employment? Should he actually go back and make sure the employer and himself both file, or since it wasn't much work, does it not really count? I heard that if you make under a certain threshold, something like $12,000 a year, you don't technically have to file. What's the truth, anyone know?

I have a feeling that they were paying your friend 'under the table' if they were paying him in cash. He would have received a W-2 by now if they kept any records of paying him.
